Asphalt emulsion sealer

A recent article written by Ryan Gorman caught our attention. In this article Mr. Gorman related how studies are proving exposure to coal tar sealants cause significantly higher rates of cancer. While the sealant is used to enhance the look and the life of your driveway, these sealants contain up to 35% coal tar pitch, a known human carcinogen. According to USA Today, this has resulted in Minnesota and Washington banning its use. Several counties and cities in Illinois, Maryland, New York and Texas have followed their lead. Hardware manufacturers including Ace, Home Depot and Lowes have also stopped selling coal tar sealants.

The Chicago Tribunes reported, that the danger comes when the sealant breaks down, forming a dust that is then washed into waterways by rain or tracked into homes and offices on the bottoms of our shoes. The United States Geological Survey goes on to explain, this dust can also be inhaled by people or animals walking across or in close proximity to sealed surfaces. The most toxic chemicals contained in the carcinogenic muck are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). They not only cause cancer, but can even inhibit childhood development and cause infertility. “Living adjacent to a coal tar sealed pavement (a parking lot or driveway for example) is estimated to increase excess lifetime cancer risk 38 times and much of the increased risk occurs during early childhood,” according to the agency.

Is there a safe alternative to coal tar sealants? Yes!
